A short history

The story behind Munich.

The International Tennis Championships of Bavaria trace their roots to 1900. In the Open Era, Munich developed into one of Germany's established clay-court events at MTTC Iphitos. Champions have included Guillermo Vilas, Ivan Lendl, Michael Stich, Roger Federer, Tommy Haas, Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune. The BMW Open was upgraded from ATP 250 to ATP 500 status in 2025, when Zverev won his third title to equal Philipp Kohlschreiber's tournament record. Ben Shelton then captured the 2026 crown.
