Stefan Edberg elevated serve-and-volley tennis with graceful movement, exceptional volleys and a classical one-handed backhand. The Swede won six Grand Slam singles titles, 41 tour-level titles and spent 72 weeks as World No.1.
Stefan Edberg emerged from Sweden with a style radically different from the baseline tradition associated with Björn Borg and Mats Wilander. After completing the junior calendar Grand Slam in 1983, he developed into one of the finest serve-and-volley players in tennis history. Edberg won two Australian Opens, two Wimbledons and two US Opens. His rivalry with Boris Becker produced three consecutive Wimbledon finals from 1988 to 1990, with Edberg winning the first and third. He first reached World No.1 in 1990 and finished both 1990 and 1991 at the top. His sportsmanship and professionalism became so closely associated with his career that the ATP's sportsmanship award bears his name.
