Pete Sampras set the championship standard of the 1990s with a dominant serve, athletic net game and exceptional composure. He won 14 Grand Slam singles titles, 64 tour-level titles and finished a record six consecutive seasons as year-end World No.1.
Pete Sampras became the defining men's champion of the 1990s. He won his first major at the 1990 US Open and developed a game ideally suited to fast courts: a formidable serve, explosive forehand and instinctive transition to the net. Sampras won seven Wimbledon titles, five US Opens and two Australian Opens. From 1993 through 1998 he finished six consecutive seasons as year-end World No.1, a record at the time. His 14th and final major came at the 2002 US Open, where he defeated longtime rival Andre Agassi in the final. He retired with the Open Era men's major record and 286 weeks at World No.1.
