Ivan Lendl

Ivan Lendl emerged from Czechoslovakia to become one of the defining champions of the 1980s. His heavy forehand, controlled aggression and unprecedented commitment to conditioning helped reshape the professional standards of elite tennis. After several major-final defeats, he broke through at Roland Garros in 1984 by recovering from two sets down against John McEnroe. That victory opened a sustained period of dominance. Lendl won three Roland Garros titles, three consecutive US Opens and two Australian Opens, while reaching eight consecutive US Open finals from 1982 through 1989. He finished four seasons as year-end World No.1 and accumulated 270 weeks at the top. His methodical approach to training, nutrition and match preparation became a blueprint for later generations.
